Women of Osteopathy: Celebrating Trailblazers in Health and Healing
Honouring the Legacy of Women in Osteopathy
Andrew Taylor Still, the originator of osteopathy, was ahead of his time in recognising the contributions of women in medicine. When he founded the American School of Osteopathy (ASO) in 1892, he ensured that women were admitted on equal terms with men—an extraordinary move for the time. While most medical schools refused female students, Still believed in their capabilities and provided them with the same rigorous training as their male counterparts.
Among the first graduates of the ASO in 1894 was Jeanette “Nettie” Bolles, who went on to become a leading force in osteopathic education and research. She was the first editor of The Journal of Osteopathy, the first vice-president of the American Osteopathic Association (AOA), and a co-founder of the Osteopathic Women’s National Association. Alongside her, women such as Louisa Burns, Adah Strand Sutherland, Anne Wales, and Viola Frymann made groundbreaking contributions to osteopathy, particularly in research and cranial osteopathy. These women not only advanced the field but also paved the way for the next generations of female osteopaths.
Women in Osteopathy Today
The influence of women in osteopathy continues to grow, with women now making up over 50% of the profession in the UK and USA. Their dedication to patient-centred care, research, and education has played a pivotal role in shaping modern osteopathy. Figures such as Barbara Ross-Lee, the first African-American woman to be appointed dean of a medical school, and Charlotte Weaver, a pioneer in cranial osteopathy, exemplify the excellence and leadership of women in the field.
